KOH SAMUI W RETREAT | W HOTEL KOH SAMUI SPA
You can reach Koh Samui either by air from Phuket, Bangkok or Pattaya with Bangkok Air or you can catch a Ferry from the mainland having taken a train or coach. The beaches in Koh Samui can be over crowded particularly on the East Coast around Chaweng. It is such a shame that the big American brands such as 7 Eleven & Mc Donalds are now on the Island as they are over most of Thailand, that said some parts of the Island are truly breathtaking particularly on the West of the Island between Ang Thong and Lipa Noi, on this side of the Island you will find Nikki Beach and numerous beach Hotels that enjoy the best sunsets and some very tranquil beaches and traditional Thai restaurants, it is definitely worth hiring a scooter or a jeep and exploring the Island.

If you feel like enjoying a real Island experience then you should take a trip to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao where you will enjoy a different laid back pace of life with very few cars deserted beaches and amazing water sports.

Chaweng Beach is where all the action and night-life takes place.

Chaweng Beach is located just 10 minutes by Air-conditioned mini van with nice comfy seats and loads of room that are located at the exit of Koh Samui arrivals, they charged a flat 400 THB to Chaweng and had a price list. Leaving the airport you are treated to real Thai life with varying types of businesses going about the daily business and locals eating in make shift restaurants that are welded on to the side of a motor bike that serve some of the tastiest food at really cheap prices.

Whilst not as pushy or in your face as Patong Beach or Pattaya Beach, Chaweng Beach sure does pack a punch in both high end Michelin standard cuisine to 6 star boutique all villa spa Hotels that occupy vast swaves of the Koh Samui coastline that unfortunately blocks many fantastic views whilst driving around the Island, Four Season, Intercontinental (opening 2013) amongst other top brand Hotels offer budget standard accommodation along with totally over the top penthouses with private pools, masseuses and butlers at your disposal 24 hours a day. One great advantage of choosing accommodation in thick of it is being able to immerse yourself in a totally different environment the moment you venture out for breakfast. If planning a 14 days stay on Koh Samui I would suggest 2 nights in Chaweng Beach, 2 nights in Lamai Beach in a bungalow before checking in to a top Hotel for total relaxation, plus you will appreciate it even more.
Filthy dirty with attitude

That old adage “Never judge a book by its cover” comes in to play at this Hotel! From the outside & reception this looks like a new Hotel, its not! The bathroom had mould growing in the grouting and on the sealant around the edge of the bathroom. The air-conditioning unit in the bedroom was positioned facing the bed and was so noisy that I had to turn it off as I couldn't sleep although when the air-con is switched off you will hear the refrigerator firing up every 15 minutes and doors slamming and noise and other rooms engaging in amorous activities. I decided to leave the air-conditioning switched on as it was so hot and it helped blank out the noise of other guests arriving back at the Hotel. I awoke after my first nights sleep to a really bad sore throat, I popped in to the pharmacy 100 meters from the Hotel and they tried to sell me a pack of anti-biotic for 800 baht (€20) I found another that charged me 180 baht for exactly the same tablets, this Lady told me to take a look at the filters on the air-con machine in my room as this may have given me the sore throat. I got back to the room and dragged the big wooded (strained) stool from the desk and got up and opened the air-con unit to find an inch thick of dirt & debris on the filter panels, it looked like they had not been cleaned in years, I simply took them both out and run them under the shower and now the air-con is not so noisy although I still have the sore throat and was advised not to drink any alcohol, so it kind of ruined my stay.

The mould in the bathroom took me 20 minutes to remove with a nail brush and a small bottle of dettol from the boots chemist down the road, I cannot understand why they do not clean these bathrooms properly it is a real health hazard, it amazes me that they would rather spend hours writing “false” positive reviews that giving the maids some overtime to get the scrubbing brushes out and get the mould issue under control. The shower curtain also had black mould growing on it.

I had left another Hotel in Chaweng Beach as despite advertising “internet in room” there was none, so booked Nora Hotel online, this has to be the only Hotel in the world that refuses to provide a 2nd key card so that you can leave your laptop on, the attitude of the reception staff bordered on hostile. I had passed this Hotel many times and from the outside it looks really nice, once you get upstairs that all changes! All of the hallway carpets are stained, I thought that perhaps they had put me on the party floor with other single males so inspected the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors and they where all the same.

After I had checked in to the Hotel the lady at reception took me to my room and gave the password for the FREE internet and showed me the mini bar etc, and then explained that if I brought a lady back to my room that it would cost an extra €1’000 baht each night that she stayed. I explained that when booking the Nora Hotel I had booked a room for two adults so should I get lucky that this would not apply, she disagreed and said no “You will have to pay 1000 baht” That night at around 2am and being unable to access the internet I popped down to use the computer in reception and watched guest after guest having to part with 1000 baht to bring a guest back to there room.

Warning! If you are bringing a laptop so that you can check your Corporate e-mail account with Outlook it will not work, you will only be able to receive e-mail not send, I found that “The Coffee Club” 5 mins down road was best place for connecting up and its free although limited to 59 minutes, this was not an issue as a big smile and “please can I have another password” I happily spent 3 hours sat on there very comfy wall backed couch on the left and there are power points under the table. If you enjoy a good quality breakfast served quick and very fresh & tasty then this is a great place to eat when in Thailand paticularily if a traditional rice breakfast is not a match for scrambled eggs on sweet fluffy toast with a fantastic cafe latte long (try one) The eggs benedict is awesome and bearing in mind I visited three different outlets was both consistent in service and quality.

I vuisited the following coffee club outlets;

Turtle Village, Mai Khao Beach Ground Floor Turtle Village Shopping Centre, Mai Khao Beach PHUKET

Jungceylon, Patong Beach Jungceylon Shopping Complex Rat-u-thit, Patong Beach 200 Pee Road PHUKET

Royal Garden Plaza Ground Floor Royal Garden Plaza 2nd Road entrance PATTAYA

Obviously when in Thailand try every Thai dish you can as it is so inexpensive to carry out a full tasting paticularily if you are traveling in a group.

I decided to rent a motorcycle and found that the further away from the centre you go the cheaper the price, after renting a 125cc Scooter I found a massive motorcycle rental place by following the road from Chaweng Beach heading towards Lamai Beach when you reach the main road almost opposite is a big motorcycle rental business & cars that had some serious looking powerful motorcycles and some 600cc automatic scooters.
